Rossmann has launched a long-term pilot project to explore how humanoid robots can support logistics processes. The drugstore chain has deployed an UBTech Walker S2 humanoid robot at its logistics center in Burgwedel, near Hanover. The unit was supplied by Terra Robotics, the German distributor of the technology.

Rossmann is among the first companies in Europe to receive the advanced Walker S2 model. The test, running throughout 2026, aims to evaluate the robot’s practical benefits in real operational environments, assess how it can reduce physical strain on employees, and determine the conditions for potential large-scale deployment, Lebensmittelpraxis reports based on Rossmann’s announcement.

The Walker S2 features 52 degrees of freedom, enabling movements that closely resemble – and in some cases surpass – human mobility. It can autonomously replace its own battery and is specifically designed for industrial and logistics applications. Terra Robotics, part of the Wortmann Group, supports Rossmann in the technical integration.

According to Hendrik van Duuren, Rossmann’s Head of Logistics, the focus is now on hands-on testing: integrating the robot into existing workflows, identifying IT requirements, and evaluating how quickly new applications can be developed. He emphasized that, amid the current hype around humanoid robotics, it is crucial to understand what truly works in everyday operations.

The robot is expected to assist mainly with repetitive and physically demanding tasks, helping reduce strain on logistics staff. Based on the results of the 2026 pilot, Rossmann plans to develop a scalable, long-term concept for the use of humanoid robotics in its logistics network.

Murat Arpaci, Managing Director of Terra Robotics, highlighted that the partnership creates a real-world use case for the Walker S2 and demonstrates how innovation and determination can actively shape the future.
