How do young adults celebrate?
The holiday habits of young people are changing: a few years ago, even fewer people returned to their parents’ house, but this year 38 percent of 19-29 year-olds are spending Christmas there. The majority celebrate at home or with relatives, and although many want to relax, every third young person also has to count on work. Students are looking forward to a particularly active holiday season: 22 percent of them are planning winter sports, and 16 percent are also planning a city trip. And those who would like to travel and visit a foreign destination – 9 percent of the young people surveyed – should take out travel insurance in advance, which can protect them from significant expenses in an unexpected situation for a small fee.
More and more young people are deciding not to celebrate in their own home, but rather with their parents. While 29 percent chose this scenario in 2022, 38 percent are returning to their childhood Christmas locations this year. The phenomenon is particularly strong among students, with 54 percent of them celebrating entirely with their parents. For men, this proportion is even higher, at 47 percent, which further indicates the appreciation of the family home. This is the conclusion of the K&H youth index, which examined the Christmas plans of 19-29 year-olds.
The proportion of those spending Christmas alone is 27 percent, and the same number of those who already live independently but will definitely visit home on one of the days of the holidays. Only 8 percent of young people spend the holiday completely alone.
Holidays with many faces: from the couch to skiing
The winter plans of young people have been relatively stable for years, and they show a similar picture this year. Seven out of ten young people will definitely spend at least part of the holidays at home, while 56 percent will also visit close relatives. 26-29 year-olds are particularly active in terms of visiting relatives, with 65 percent of them mentioning this program.
However, for many, vacation does not mean complete shutdown: 30 percent of young people are working during the holidays this year as well. However, those who can free themselves up often choose a more active program. For example, students are planning winter sports, city trips or museum visits at an above-average rate – for them, Christmas is not only a time for bagels and relaxation – although 37 percent mentioned quiet relaxation – but also for a little discovery, and partying and fun are not left out.
Safety is important
The research clearly shows that some young people spend the holiday season not only at home, but also on the road. According to the survey, 9 percent of them are considering traveling abroad, and it is important for them to take care of their safety.
During a trip abroad, even a minor medical treatment or an unexpected accident can cost you significant amounts of money without travel insurance – often times even several times what it would be at home. In comparison, proper travel insurance only costs a fraction of the cost, yet it provides serious protection and takes the biggest burden off your shoulders if an unexpected situation arises. This can be especially important for young people: predictability and safety are often at least as valuable a part of a trip as the experience itself. According to K&H data, in recent years the number of travel insurance policies taken out in December has remained below the monthly average for the given year.
The latest data paints a picture in which young people are organizing their holidays more and more consciously. Although for many, Christmas is still about family togetherness, for others it is supplemented with new programs, travel and active relaxation. However, the common point is the same: they want to experience the holiday season as predictably and safely as possible.
