Despite the import ban, Ukrainian honey makes life miserable for Hungarian beekeepers
The Hungarian government has banned the import of several agricultural products from Ukraine, including honey. While Hungarian beekeepers welcome the decision, they still face challenges because of the influx of low-quality Ukrainian honey in the European market.
In 2021, honey prices in Hungary dropped by a quarter due to the large quantity of Ukrainian honey flooding the EU market, which was made possible by the lifting of protective tariffs due to solidarity with Ukraine’s war. Although the ban on Ukrainian honey imports is beneficial for Hungarian beekeepers and consumers who can access higher quality honey, the oversupply of cheap Ukrainian honey may take some time to clear out of the market, and the situation for Hungarian beekeepers may not normalize quickly.
