Wines from seven countries at the ninth Portugieser World Championship
Portugieser, i.e. blue port grape variety and the wines made from it are an integral part of Central European wine culture, even though they exist in the shadow of world varieties.
However, many wine regions are still fighting for their survival and development, which is why the wine competition organized for the ninth time on April 14th, for which entries were received from 7 countries in 2023, is important. The international jury will choose a champion in four categories, but on the second day of the competition in Pécs, the general public can also taste most of the named wines, and even here the winners of the Hungarian Wine Grand Prix 2022 will present the best Hungarian wines according to the Circle of Hungarian Wine Connoisseurs.
In 2013, the Pécs Borozó gastronomic and wine magazine organized the Portugieser Du Monde wine competition focusing on the variety for the first time. At that time, only Portuguese wines from Villány could enter the thematic tasting, and the next year the field was expanded to international ones. The Villány wine region, in partnership with Pécs Borozó, announced the Portugieser du Monde wine competition again this year, as we firmly believe that Portugieser is one of the unavoidable and important varieties of Central Europe, which unfortunately rarely gets the spotlight in the wine world.
