Local businessmen buy Carrefour’s Romanian chain

Carrefour is withdrawing from Romania, its retail network will be purchased by Paval Holding – profit.ro reports based on the company’s announcement.

“The sale of Carrefour Romania reflects the fact that the revaluation of the portfolio, which began in early 2025, is definitely progressing. I am confident that the agreement with Paval Holding is an important opportunity that will serve the development and continued success of the company”

– stated Alexandre Bompard, CEO of Carrefour.

The transaction is valued at 823 million euros and is expected to close in the second half of 2026. In Romania, Carrefour operates 55 hypermarkets, 191 supermarkets, 202 convenience stores and 30 discount stores. In 2025, Carrefour’s Romanian subsidiaries achieved a net profit of 173 million euros on sales of 2.7 billion euros.

Carrefour has been present in Romania since 2001, having previously acquired the local retail chains Billa and Cora.

Paval Holding is owned by two Romanian businessmen, Dragos and Adrian Paval. The Paval brothers own the largest Romanian DIY chain, Dedeman, but also have interests in real estate development and tourism. Last year, Paval Holding acquired Praktiker’s stores in Greece.
