Online retail expansion reaches Hungary
In 2013 Hungary’s retail turnover neared HUF 7,000 billon in value, from which online retail’s share is estimated to be HUF 200-220 billion. This share represents more than 3 percent of the market in total and has been growing dynamically in the last few years. In the 18-49 age group the percentage of those who buy something online every month grew from 25 percent (in 2012) to 28 percent. Books are purchased most often off the internet (31 percent) but about 25 percent of those asked use the internet to take out an insurance policy, reserve hotel rooms or book holidays, buy cinema/theatre/concert tickets or purchase IT devices. Average spending per category: it is the highest – more than HUF 50,000 – in the consumer electronics category.
