Harghita County will be the European Gastronomic Region in 2027
In 2027, Harghita County will bear the title of European Gastronomic Region, based on the decision of the International Institute for Gastronomy, Culture, Art and Tourism (IGCAT), the press service of the Harghita County Government told MTI on Wednesday.
The international recognition will be presented on February 6, 2025, in the Székely County, as part of a festive event, they wrote.
According to the statement, the initiators launched the application in 2023 to win the title of European Gastronomic Region in 2027. The professional jury of the international institute visited the county between October 6 and 11 to learn about the local gastronomic heritage, community initiatives and efforts to build sustainable tourism. Diane Dodd, the president of the organization, praised Harghita County’s unique cultural values, harmonious landscape and the unity of local communities, calling it an inspiration for the whole world.
“The quality of Harghita County’s application and the exceptional organization of the jury’s visit are highly commendable. The active participation of more than a hundred actors representing different sectors demonstrates the commitment and cooperation that elevates Harghita’s gastronomy to the forefront of global recognition,”
– the announcement quoted the jury’s letter.
They recalled: Harghita County’s gastronomic heritage is made up of the meeting of Hungarian, Romanian, Armenian and Székely traditions, which they intend to develop in the spirit of sustainability and innovation.
The consortium established to apply for the award aims to create a sustainable food ecosystem through the collaboration of local producers, chefs and community actors that simultaneously supports the local economy, protects cultural values and enriches European gastronomic diversity.
