Counterfeit products could be sold on AliExpress
The European Commission has sent an inquiry to the online trading platform AliExpress, asking the company to provide information on its measures to protect consumers online, in particular with regard to the online distribution of counterfeit medicines.
According to EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, they aim to ensure the removal of illegal or unsafe products through digital trading platforms in the EU, including counterfeit and potentially dangerous medicines and medicinal products.
AliExpress has until November 27 to respond to the Commission’s questions. The Commission will then evaluate the responses and consider what action to take. If AliExpress’s responses are incorrect, incomplete or misleading, the Commission may fine the company under the Digital Services Act. If the company does not respond in time, the Commission may also request a decision, and if the company repeatedly fails to respond to the deadline, periodic fines may be imposed on it.
