There is a shortage of onions on the European market
In particular, few onions were produced in our country last year, which is mainly due to the historic drought and the shrinking of growing areas for years. Hungary needs significant onion imports, and the situation will certainly not improve for a few months. Therefore, according to the experts, a 50-60 percent price increase is not out of the question for spring. Currently, its retail price is around HUF 500, but it may soon reach HUF 700-800 per kilo.
Our country currently imports most of its onions from Austria, which is considered to be of poorer quality but more expensive, and in addition, traders have to pay for the goods in euros, which is not helped by the weak HUF.
– quotes Barná Forgács, managing director of Agrárgazdaság Kft., in Agroinform.
On the basis of the area-based subsidies granted in 2022, red onions were cultivated on 1,292 hectares in Hungary, of which 910 hectares were in spring and 383 in autumn. This is a significant decrease compared to 2021, when the plant was planted on 1,574 hectares.
