Dairy farmers won, retailers increase prices
German dairy farmers say they have ended a 10-day strike protesting low milk prices.
Milk federation union chairman Romuald Schaber said Thursday, "We
dairy farmers are finally being met at eye level. Now it is time to
return to normal." The BDM group represents 32,000 German dairy
farmers. The farmers launched a boycott on May 27 and refused to
deliver their milk to creameries causing supplies at some grocery
stores to run short this week. But now major supermarket chain Lidl
has raised its milk price by 15 cents per liter. Other major
supermarket chains say they will follow suit. German agriculture
minister Horst Seehofer says he thinks farmers and grocers can reach
a "fair and cost-effective" milk price.
