Robot development is accelerating
Samsung is becoming the largest shareholder in Rainbow Robotics in a bid to accelerate future robotics developments, including humanoid robots. Samsung first acquired a 14.7% stake in the Korean company in 2023 for an investment of KRW 86.8 billion, and is exercising its call option to increase its stake to 35%. Rainbow Robotics will be included in Samsung’s consolidated financial statements as a subsidiary.
Samsung is further strengthening its position in the field of robotics technology development through the collaboration with Rainbow Robotics. Rainbow Robotics was founded in 2011 by researchers at the Humanoid Robot Research Center at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), who created Korea’s first bipedal robot, “Hubo.”
By combining Samsung’s AI and software technology with Rainbow Robotics’ robotics technology, they plan to accelerate the development of intelligent, high-tech humanoids.
Samsung will also establish a synergy council with Rainbow Robotics to strengthen their leading roles in the global advanced robot business. The alliance is expected to serve as a connecting link to support the growth of both companies by developing future robot technologies and key business strategies, as well as identifying and assessing market needs.
