The Hungarian village program is successful in supporting village communities; Since the start of the program, the government has spent almost HUF 50 billion in support to strengthen or save village communities – the Prime Minister’s Commissioner responsible for the development of modern settlements announced on Saturday in Pereszny, Vas County, where the renovated Croatian community center was handed over.
Alpár Gyopáros reminded that after Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the Hungarian village program in 2018, they talked with mayors, parish priests, civil organizations and heads of ethnic municipalities about the areas in which improvements would be needed.
Recreating, strengthening or saving local communities was prominent among the requests, he said, adding that the first step to this is to have a space where the community can gather, meet, and organize programs.
Since the start of the program, 1,500 community spaces managed by municipalities have been renovated, 1,300 church community spaces have been renovated, and in addition, the municipalities have received support for the purchase of nearly 400 properties that have been converted for some community purpose, he said.
