GVH investigation: the start of a first-year student’s school year could have cost up to one hundred thousand forints
The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has launched an investigation into the costs of the start of the school year in September. Although textbooks for first-year students are free, purchasing school supplies, school bags, gym equipment and other accessories could cost families up to one hundred thousand forints.
Speaking to Magyar Nemzet, Csaba Balázs Rigó, the president of the GVH, said: they are investigating whether the high prices are justified by market processes or whether there may be a prohibited restriction of competition in the background. The investigation also covers several retail chains and suppliers.
Rigó added: in grocery stores and drugstores, multinational chains are free to set their prices, let suppliers compete, and improve the economy of their operations. The GVH is also investigating the commercial practices of Booking.com and Temu, calling the former dubious and the latter aggressive.
According to data from BiztoDöntés.hu, at the end of August, many parents were only able to cover the costs of the start of the school year with loans.
