GVH: About You has started paying compensation to consumers

The operator of the online fashion portal About You has started compensating customers following a competition authority investigation that concluded in November. The company paid a fine of 505 million forints to the budget in December, and now it is paying 1,760 forints per person to hundreds of thousands of consumers – the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) told MTI on Friday

The statement highlighted that the Hamburg-based company acted in a deceptive manner: it developed and operated a price and discount display system that did not ensure that consumers received real information about the available price discounts and their extent. According to the authority, the company also exerted psychological pressure on customers by indicating the duration of the promotions with a countdown clock every second and displaying messages emphasizing the limited availability of the products during the purchase process.

About You admitted the violations and agreed to pay compensation to all consumers who made purchases on the website or in the application between December 31, 2022 and December 31, 2024. Consumers whose bank details the company has will receive a direct refund, while others will be credited with the amount in the form of so-called About You-coins. The credit can be used within one year and will be automatically deducted upon purchase

The company was able to reduce the amount of the fine imposed through cooperation and undertaking a consumer protection compliance program – the GVH announced, adding that the amount of the refund due to consumers may exceed 500 million forints.

The statement quotes Csaba Balázs Rigó, the President of the GVH, who said at the meeting of the Economic Committee of the Parliament in early March: In 2025, the GVH Competition Council It imposed fines of more than 3.7 billion forints, while granting 3.3 billion forints in fine reductions to cooperating businesses. Thanks to the office’s procedures, consumers received direct compensation of approximately 800 million forints, he added.
