GVH president: The key issue is the broad but correct application of artificial intelligence
“The broad, but correct application of artificial intelligence can have a significant positive effect on the productivity and competitiveness of domestic enterprises,” stressed Balázs Csaba Rigó, president of the Economic Competition Office (GVH) at the 50th European Competition Day in Budapest.
During the one-day conference, prominent experts from the continent’s competition law community discussed the most current policy issues, including the relationship between sustainability and competition policy and the future opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence. Within the framework of the conference, GVH also presented the results of the artificial intelligence market analysis to the international community.
“The challenges facing the European Union are greater than ever. Real progress can be achieved through joint professional efforts and mutually beneficial collaborations.”
Balázs Csaba Rigó, the president of the GVH, pointed out in his opening presentation.
The European Competition Day has been organized every six months since 2000, traditionally organized by the competition authority of the country holding the presidency of the Council of the European Union. The GVH organized the famous event for the 50th time in a row, as an official program of the Hungarian EU Presidency, in Budapest. Nearly 200 experts and competition policy makers from nearly 30 countries participated in the international conference, including renowned speakers such as Natalie Harsdorf, President of the Austrian Competition Authority, and Benoît Cœuré, President of the French Competition Authority.
Balázs Csaba Rigó, the president of the GVH, emphasized:
“Strengthening the competitiveness of the European Union and individual member states is a key issue from the point of view of the economic and social prospects of our continent, because the EU has lagged behind its big rivals.”He added: “Proactive competition authority action will also play an important role in the future.”
In support of the enlargement policy, one of the important objectives of the Hungarian EU presidency, the GVH – in addition to the 27 EU member states – invited the competition authorities of 8 other countries in various phases of EU accession to the 50th European Competition Day.
The three main topics of the international event were competitiveness, the relationship between sustainability and competition policy, the experience of applying the regulation on digital markets (Digital Markets Act – DMA) and the opportunities and challenges resulting from the breakthrough of artificial intelligence. GVH – in time for the conference – published its market analysis on artificial intelligence on October 21, in which it examined the effects of the technology on market competition and consumers.
