Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH), and László Palkovics, Government Commissioner responsible for artificial intelligence (AI), met at the GVH headquarters for a professional consultation. During the meeting, the parties reviewed the means by which the national competition authority can support the implementation of the new national AI strategy. Csaba Balázs Rigó presented last Friday’s GVH decision regarding Microsoft, thanks to which the global technology giant is teaching its AI-based systems in Hungarian.

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has reached a commitment of historic proportions in terms of the Hungarian language in its proceedings against Microsoft. As a result of the Hungarian national competition authority’s investigation, the global technology company initiated the implementation of a comprehensive commitment. The essence of this is that Microsoft will train its artificial intelligence-based systems on a properly prepared dataset based on 10 billion Hungarian words and make the dataset usable for other AI systems. This groundbreaking development could significantly improve the capabilities of Hungarian-language AI-based applications.

In connection with the results of the case closed last Friday, Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the GVH, hosted László Palkovics, Government Commissioner responsible for artificial intelligence, at a professional consultation. Csaba Balázs Rigó stated:

“The decision of the GVH Competition Council and the implementation of the mandatory commitment contribute significantly to the dissemination and preservation of the Hungarian language and to the protection of the national interests of Hungarian culture in the digital space.”

The President of the GVH pointed out:

“The development of artificial intelligence-based Hungarian language models is fundamentally a matter of national sovereignty.”

László Palkovics believed that “the commitments achieved by the GVH play a key role in ensuring that the application of artificial intelligence and other new technologies takes place in a transparent manner in Hungary, and that large companies, in addition to representing their business interests, also appear in the field of supporting community uses.” The government commissioner added:

“The recent decision of the GVH contributes to us not only being followers, but also shaping the future world built on digital AI.” During the professional exchange of views, László Palkovics also gave a detailed overview of the new national AI strategies. He said: “If we do not build our own linguistic AI capabilities, then others will decide for us what the Hungarian language and culture means in the digital space.”
