GVH President: digitalization is transforming competition and consumer protection law
The rise of digitalization and artificial intelligence is transforming competition and consumer protection law, said Csaba Balázs Rigó, President of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) at the VII. At the Hungarian Competition Forum in Budapest, according to the office’s information on Thursday.
The announcement recalled that the Hungarian Competition Forum is the annual peak event of domestic competition law, at which domestic and international representatives of the profession discuss the most current topics of competition law and competition policy.
At the professional conference jointly organized by the GVH, the Hungarian Competition Law Association (MVE) and the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE JÁK), the targeted protection of Hungarian families and children, the competition law aspects of artificial intelligence and the private enforcement of competition law were discussed. focus.
In his opening remarks, the President of the GVH highlighted:
digital platforms, artificial intelligence, the dilemmas of data collection and use, the encouragement of innovation and the conflicts of interest of market regulation, and economic competitiveness are all areas where competition policy makers and competition authorities have an important role to play.
The announcement stated: Zoltán Hegymegi-Barakonyi, the Minister of the Environment and the Environment, also President of the International Competition Law League (LIDC), and László Komáromi, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science of Pázmány Péter Catholic University. The participants were greeted in a video message by Andrew N. Ferguson, Chairman of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The keynote speech on the latest challenges of competition law and the connections between digitalization was given by Andreas Mundt, President of the German Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt).
Among the topics of this year’s forum, László Palkovics, the Government Commissioner responsible for artificial intelligence, also participated in the panel discussion related to artificial intelligence and current events in digital markets. In connection with the current challenges of private law enforcement, the GVH presented the recently published volume “Private law enforcement in competition law” within the framework of the Competition Mirror book series.
The main topic of the professional conference was the targeted protection of families and children against unfair commercial practices and the risks of the digital space. Regarding the latter, Csaba Balázs Rigó emphasized: Hungarian families and our children must be protected in the digital space as well! – the competition authority informed in its announcement.
