Hungarian families spend an average of more than half a million forints on a holiday abroad, according to a nationally representative survey of a thousand people commissioned by Groupama Insurance and OTP Bank.

According to their statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, the most popular travel destinations are still Croatia, Italy and Austria, while Eastern and Central European countries, such as the Czech Republic, are also on the rise, especially for short, 1-2-day trips. The Southern European region is not only the most popular travel destination, but it is also where Hungarian tourists spend the longest time on average, 5-10 days on average.

Overall, a quarter of those traveling this year are planning a trip abroad longer than a week, and they are primarily planning these trips for the summer months. Many are planning multiple trips, with 12 percent planning to travel abroad twice and 8 percent planning to travel abroad three or more times, they wrote.

The majority of those surveyed clearly expect a price increase, with three-quarters of them saying that all holiday-related services will be more expensive this year, so they expect higher costs for travel, accommodation, entrance fees and restaurant consumption.

The average amount spent on a trip for a family is around 575 thousand forints. Interestingly, couples traveling as a couple also spend almost the same amount, 540 thousand forints, on a trip. The most expensive trips are flights, for which Hungarians spend an average of 700 thousand forints, more than double the expected cost of around 300 thousand forints for car, train or bus trips,

they added.

Two-thirds of those planning to travel abroad plan to take out travel insurance, and the proportion of those who do so for each trip has increased by 3 percent compared to last year. More than a quarter of respondents have experienced some kind of damage during a holiday abroad, and 53 percent of them believe it is realistic that this could happen to them too. Health services are a determining factor when choosing travel insurance, the research showed.
