After Cyprus, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has also been confirmed in Greece. FMD first appeared in a herd of cattle and small ruminants on the island of Lesbos. More than 1,500 animals have now been affected in 5 herds. Nébih draws attention to the fact that increased caution is warranted when it comes to dairy and meat-containing foods coming from the Republic of Cyprus and Greece, and that they should avoid bringing them home if possible. It is important that Hungarian farmers adhere to disease control regulations in order to prevent this!

The first outbreak was confirmed in mid-March 2026 in a herd of cattle and small ruminants. Subsequently, four additional secondary outbreaks were confirmed on the island. The disease was last present in the affected area 30 years ago. Experts have confirmed the presence of the SAT-1 serotype of the disease. The European Commission has initiated the issuance of an implementing regulation on emergency measures.

The emergence of the disease has serious economic consequences due to its high contagiousness and rapid spread

Infected animals cannot be treated, so if the disease is confirmed in even one animal on a farm, all cloven-hoofed animals must be eradicated. Nébih draws attention to the fact that increased caution is warranted when dealing with dairy and meat-containing foods from the Republic of Cyprus and Greece, and that they should be avoided if possible. The authority also recommends that those returning from the affected areas avoid contact with susceptible animals, such as cattle, sheep, goats or pigs, for at least three days.

Prevention and continuous vigilance remain of paramount importance

Consistent compliance with epidemiological regulations is essential to protect livestock. In case of any suspicion in a herd of susceptible animals, the attending veterinarian and the local animal health authority must be notified immediately!
