A global shortage is coming, Hungarians’ favorite side dish may disappear from the shelves
India, the world’s largest rice exporter, is struggling with serious problems, so its exports may decrease, warns Bloomberg.
In India, despite praying for rain, they have not sown rice in such a small area for three years because there is little rainfall. Sown area decreased by 13%, mainly in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. A quarter of India’s rice crop used to come from here.
Global rice traders fear that a poor crop in India could lead to export restrictions at the worst time. Billions of people around the world are waiting for India’s rice exports, because the wheat shortage has led to price increases that many can no longer afford. They are advised to switch to rice! But its price is also rising. In the last two weeks, the price of rice has increased by 10% in India, primarily because a large amount was exported to Bangladesh, which is struggling with hunger. Rice is primarily grown and consumed in Asia. Due to the huge stocks, there has been no significant price increase until now, but this may be over now. That’s why all eyes are now on India: the monsoon season can improve the current depressing situation a lot. Normal rainfall is expected in August and September and this would have a good effect on the rice crop as well. But Indian farmers are not optimistic.
