FruitVeb: The apple crop can be close to the average this year
This year, the FruitVeb Hungarian Vegetables and Fruit Interprofessional Organization and Product Council is expecting 550-600 thousand tons of apple crop that is close to the average. The actual crops will also depend on the weather of the next two months. According to the product council, no higher consumer prices are expected.
According to the Council’s Wednesday announcement the spring frost is the primary cause of the lack of bigger crops in Hungary. Hungary’s apple crop is 550-600 thousand tons per year, but it has fluctuated between 300 and 950 thousand tons over the past 10 years. These extremes draw attention to the very poor crop security, which is a fundamental obstacle to building and maintaining markets. (MTI)
