FruitVeB: despite extreme weather, this year’s strawberries crop is good
The winter and spring frosts did not cause significant damage to strawberry plantations this year, so producers, like in the average yield years, can harvest about 15,000 tons of strawberries from 700 to 800 hectares, if the weather does not spoil the crop in the coming weeks – the Vice President of the FruitVeB Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Fruit Organization and Product Board told MTI.
Apáti Ferenc said that the droughty autumn and spring did not favor any agricultural crop, but it affected the strawberries less, because the plantations are irrigated.
In April, the consumer price of Hungarian strawberries ranged from 2000 to 4000 forints per kilogram, while Spanish and Greek import fruit – as every year – was much cheaper. (MTI)
