Chains under a franchise system
One of the biggest problems Hungarian catering businesses are faced with is the supply of good quality materials. Two initiatives have been launched recently which might help restaurant owners in finding a supply of premium quality local products and also local farmers in selling their produce. A retail chain operated under a franchise system was opened by MAGOSZ in January, where stores are supplied by local farmers directly. Supply prices and the limit for consumer prices are determined by MAGOSZ . At present, they have 30 stores and plan to open a total of 200 units. The “Hungarian Products Store” chain was opened in May. Strict quality criteria applies to the products sold by the chain, which also has a quality trademark of its own (Premium Hungaricum Védjegy) intended to serve as a guarantee of quality for consumers. At present, the chain is composed of 15 units.

Hungarian pizza chain
Pizza Oscar opened in April is the first unit of the new domestic pizza chain. All units of the chain will have an identical image and pizza range and will also provide delivery service. They plan to open 8-10 units in Budapest the following 18 months. Later, they intend to open units outside Budapest as well.

One succeeding…
The opening of the first Starbucks unit is to be delayed, probably as a result of the crisis, although it has already signed a franchise agreement with AmRest. The first Costa has been opened by Lapker, near Astoria.

Success on all fronts
Results achieved by McDonald’s in May serve as proof that fast food chains can profit from the recession: global sales were up by 5.1 percent, compared to 2008, while growth was 12 percent in Hungary.
