More and more research confirms that the majority of chewing gums available in stores contain microplastics. These tiny particles, smaller than 5 millimeters, can be released in the thousands during chewing, especially in the first few minutes – according to an American study, up to 3,000 from a single piece – vg.hu.

Manufacturers have typically labeled plastic ingredients as “gum base”, which do not decompose, so they are not only harmful to the environment, but can also be detected in the human body. However, consumer awareness and research results have forced the industry to respond: the development of microplastic-free chewing gums has begun.

The new products are made from natural, plant-based ingredients – such as chicle resin or other biodegradable materials. They are not only healthier, but can also be composted and leave no environmental footprint. According to manufacturers, the biggest challenge will not be the technology, but the consumer’s adaptation, as the familiar taste and texture must be reproduced in a more sustainable form.

The trend is also exciting from a market perspective: microplastic-free chewing gum is expected to become an independent, rapidly growing segment in the coming years. The demand for health-conscious and environmentally friendly products is growing steadily, so there is a real chance in the chewing gum market that “free” solutions will become mass products in a short time.
