At the same time, the minister emphasized: the danger has not passed, Brussels is still trying to take away farmers’ area-based subsidies and give them to Ukraine. According to István Nagy, it is a significant achievement that, at the Hungarian initiative, the EU agriculture ministers adopted Council conclusions on the farmer-centric, post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The member states unanimously supported the text proposed by the Hungarian Presidency. The agriculture ministers sent a firm, unambiguous and clear message to Brussels that they expect a simpler, farmer-friendly new subsidy system from the European Union – the head of the agriculture ministry explained. Farmers must be at the heart of EU agricultural policy, therefore separate and adequate resources are needed to ensure that the CAP can meet its multiple objectives – he stressed. Area-based payments must be maintained in the future so that farmers’ income is secured – István Nagy emphasized He said: the agricultural ministers stood in favor of a separate, independent and two-pillar CAP, in which direct payments to replace income and rural development measures supporting viable rural areas should play a key role.

Guaranteeing farmers’ income security is essential to improve competitiveness, in which the basic payment should play a key role – he added

The minister put it this way: family and small farms are fundamental values of European agriculture, which must be treated with priority and preserved. He reminded that farmers produce essential public goods by guaranteeing food security, ensuring daily bread for families. We need a Common Agricultural Policy that continues to contribute to guaranteeing food security, not only in Hungary, but throughout the European Union – the Minister of Agriculture emphasized in a video uploaded to Facebook.
