The Budapest Transport Center is extending the Bubi pilot period in view of the extreme weather conditions experienced in recent weeks: the test will last until March 5, during which time the service can be used with the existing pilot pass, but it is also possible to purchase a new pass and use it on a per-minute basis. BKK is also working on the introduction of the third generation of Bubi during the test period; the new bikes are planned to appear on the streets of Budapest in June at the latest.

BKK launched the pilot period following the end of the second generation of Bubi in December 2025 with the aim of examining the usage habits of Bubi users in the 6th district by involving Mobi points. These uniform urban micromobility points in the new generation of Bubi will allow bicycles to be picked up and dropped off in as many places as possible, and will also allow scooters and other micromobility devices to be dropped off at these stations in addition to bikes. BKK is anonymously analyzing the data on the use of Mobi points in order to better understand user needs, optimize the network, and prepare the introduction of the new Bubi as efficiently as possible. However, the extreme weather experienced last month did not allow for the collection of the appropriate amount of data, so BKK is extending the pilot period until March 5.

You can still ride a Bubi at a favorable price

Anyone who already has a Bubi pilot pass can use the service with their existing pass until the end of the pilot period. In addition, a new pass can be purchased (the product provides half an hour of cycling for 500 forints with each rental and is valid until the end of the pilot regardless of the date of purchase), and minute-based usage will remain available.

During the extended period, the system will operate with a reduced fleet of nearly 1,000 bicycles; however, BKK’s goal remains the same: to gain as much experience as possible before the launch of the next-generation Bubi.

The new Bubi is coming soon

The company is working hard on the introduction of the next generation of Bubi, for which it signed a contract with the new service partner last year. The new system represents progress in every respect: a much larger, flexibly expandable fleet of new bicycles will be available to users.

With the new generation of Bubi, the number of bicycles will also increase significantly: in the initial period, the new system will provide a total of 3,300 bicycles (of which 2,500 are mechanical and 800 are electrically assisted). Over time, at least 5,000 completely new bicycles will be available, and then it will be able to cover all important transport hubs with a minimum of 30,000 trips, i.e. all metro stations, beyond the borders of the current service area. The aim with electrically assisted bicycles is to serve a wider range of users. Reaching customers who, for some reason, have not had a realistic alternative to Bubi’s service, but who can now choose it with confidence.

The new service will later reach other parts of the city, such as Örs vezér tere, Kőbánya-Kispest, Újpest-Városkapu, the József Attila housing estate, Angyalföld, Zugló or Ðrmező. In addition, bicycles will be available for pick-up and drop-off at Mobi points.

The new generation of Bubi will be launched by June 22, 2026 at the latest, but BKK and its service provider are also investigating the possibility of pre-delivery so that those traveling in Budapest can use an even better, more easily accessible service as soon as possible.

BKK recommends the use of public transport and other sustainable and shared forms of transport in the spring months – until the arrival of the new Bubi – and supports private service providers operating in Budapest that offer alternative solutions.
