In 2023, the animals were fed mainly with fermented and fibrous bulk feed
In Hungary, 7,598,000 tons (100 percent coverage) of fodder were used for cattle in 2023 at livestock farms. In 2023, livestock keepers used 591,000 tons of fodder for sheep (85 percent coverage), 19,300 tons for goats (51 percent coverage), and 124,900 tons for horses (35 percent coverage).
In 2023, a significant part of the raw materials used for animal feed was made up of fermented and fibrous bulk feeds for all animal species. In the case of ruminants, several animal husbandry companies and individual farmers have also voted in favor of grazing, so the animals are on the pastures from spring to autumn, and in the winter they receive hay and grain feed. The share of grain feed in the total feed used per animal species ranged from 6 to 14.8 percent, so it proved to be the second most important group of feed raw materials after fermented and fibrous bulk feeds. Fats, oils, minerals and premixes had the lowest share in animal feeds in 2023, with a ratio of 0.3 to 1.2 percent.
In 2023, livestock keepers used haylage, silage and fiber bulk feed in the highest proportion to feed horses (87.9 percent) and beef cattle
In the case of sheep and goats, 80.9 and 81.3 percent, while in the case of dairy cattle, fermented and fibrous bulk feed represented the lowest share of 70.3 percent. Among grain crops, corn plays a leading role, 37.3–58.9 percent is used to feed various animals. Horses are an exception, where the share of oats in grain crops was 53.4 percent in 2023.
