Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits Southern Spain
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Spain this morning, shaking more than 50 towns and cities, including popular tourist destinations such as Alicante and Murcia, according to the Spanish National Geographic Institute.
The quake occurred at 7:13 AM near the coastal province of Almería, at a shallow depth of just two kilometers – reported the Daily Mail. Residents and tourists described the tremors as “strong” and “surprisingly long”, with many awakened from their sleep.
In Roquetas de Mar, a tourist wrote on social media: “You could feel it clearly. The entire hotel room shook for several seconds.” A British expat living in Almería called it “a rough wake-up” and “frankly terrifying,” while another local said, “the whole house was shaking.”
Dramatic footage has emerged showing lights swaying and buildings rattling. José Manuel Navarro, a local resident, said he jumped out of bed and stood in the doorframe during the quake.
Tremors were also reported in cities across Andalusia, including Malaga, Granada, and Jaen, as well as throughout the Levante region, encompassing Murcia, Alicante, and Albacete. So far, no injuries or damage have been reported.
