Earthquake threat? These are the most endangered holiday destinations in Europe right now
Another earthquake has caused panic in Turkey: the strongest wave in the vicinity of Istanbul reached a magnitude of 6.2, writes vg.hu, citing Reisereporter. The earthquake was also felt in the surrounding provinces, and even radiated as far as the Turkish Riviera, northern Greece, and Bulgaria. According to Turkish press reports, more than two hundred injuries have been registered.
The risk of earthquakes in Turkey is particularly high, as the country lies at the junction of the Eurasian and African plates. This geological feature particularly affects the Antalya region and the Aegean resorts.
According to Statista’s global ranking, Turkey is the fifth most vulnerable country in the world in terms of earthquakes, but Greece is also on the list: 102 earthquakes were registered here between 1900 and 2021. The island of Crete is considered an earthquake hotspot in the middle of the Aegean archipelago. Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos and Rhodes are also considered high-risk in the eastern Aegean.
In the Ionian Sea, the islands of Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Lefkada also face frequent seismic activity. A series of earthquakes also caused alarm around Santorini in February, but judging by summer flight bookings, the island’s popularity seems to have remained undiminished.
