The desire to travel is increasing, but not yet real
Although the desire to travel among middle-aged Hungarians is increasing, the level before the low point of the year before last is still far away, according to the K&H Sure Future Index. Most of them, 55 percent of those aged 30-59, are planning a domestic trip of up to 4 days this year, compared to 51 and 46 percent in the previous two years. A longer vacation, whether abroad or domestic, is in the scenario for only 39 percent of them. The majority are forced to give up on this primarily due to a lack of money.
The news regarding the desire to travel among middle-aged people is mixed, according to the first quarter results of the K&H Sure Future Index, the financial institution announced. Travel plans saw a significant decline in 2023 due to high inflation, and although the desire to travel increased slightly in 2024 and 2025, the level of 2022 is still far away.
Where and for how long?
This year, 55 percent of middle-aged people think that they will be able to go on a shorter domestic trip of a maximum of 4 days, for example, for a long weekend. A year earlier, 51 percent could do this, and in 2023, only 46 percent could do this. At the same time, almost seven out of ten were still able to plan this vacation in 2022. Only 29 percent of respondents are planning a longer domestic vacation of at least 5 days this year. Last year, this was true for 26 percent, and the year before that, 24 percent, while in 2022, the ratio was over 40 percent.
28 percent of those surveyed are planning a shorter trip abroad, while 23 percent are planning a longer one this year. In 2024, their ratios were 26 and 21 percent, and in 2023, the ratios were 19 and 16 percent. Three years ago, in 2022, 32 percent expected to spend a short time abroad, and 26 percent expected to spend more than 5 days abroad.
“Travel insurance is a key accessory for foreign trips, no matter how short the time the people involved are going abroad. Any unforeseen event can happen, such as an accident that results in the need for medical or hospital care, which can impose very significant expenses on travelers. This problem can be addressed with travel insurance, which, depending on the service package and the travel destination, typically costs a few hundred forints per person per day,”
– said Pálma Székely, head of K&H’s sales and life insurance business.
