Fewer pigs than before
An analysis by the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture reveals that the number of pigs has not been this low since the 1960s. With the strengthening of the Forint it is cheaper for abattoirs to import – 30 percent of the meat they process is from abroad. According to data from KSH, the number of pigs is 14 percent lower than last year: on 1 June, there were less than 3.2 million pigs in Hungary. 69 percent of the stock is owned by economic organisations and 31 percent belongs to family farms.
