Czech beer culture added to the list of Czech intangible heritage
Czech beer culture has been added to the list of Czech intangible cultural heritage, Czech Culture Minister Martin Baxa, whose ministry initiated the move, announced in Prague on Thursday.
“The inclusion of Czech traditional beer culture in the list of national intangible cultural heritage provides an opportunity for our beer culture to apply for inclusion in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List,”
the minister said at a press conference. On this occasion, Martin Baxa presented a commemorative plaque to representatives of the Czech Breweries Association.
There are about 550 breweries in the Czech Republic, and the sector employs more than 65,000 people.
About 20 million hectoliters of beer are brewed in the Czech Republic every year. In 2023, the beer industry contributed about 29 billion crowns (464 billion forints) to the state budget. The average annual consumption of beer per capita is 140 liters, which gives the Czechs the world lead.
“We are proud that Czech beer culture has been included in the list. This will greatly help us in preserving and further developing the heritage of beer culture,”
– Tomás Slunecko, president of the Czech Breweries Association, told reporters.
