Carrefour Argentina has acquired the Super A supermarket chain, which operates 16 stores in the western province of Mendoza, for an undisclosed amount.

This move has significantly boosted Carrefour’s expansion plans by effectively doubling its planned Carrefour Express store openings for the year.

The Super A stores will be rebranded as Carrefour Express and commence operations under the new format from this month.

All 60 Super A employees will be integrated into Carrefour’s workforce of 17,000 in Argentina.

The former owner, Sauda, confirmed that the sale was for goodwill purposes and prioritised job security, noting that its focus will now shift to new expansion projects.

David Collas, CEO of Carrefour Argentina, stated that this acquisition strengthens its position as the largest supermarket chain in the country, with over 700 stores across 22 provinces.

This move has doubled the company’s planned Express store openings for the year, and Carrefour Argentina recently surpassed 500 Express stores with a new opening in Córdoba.

Expansion Strategy

This acquisition is part of Carrefour’s broader 2025-27 expansion strategy, which includes a €347 million investment to open 100 new branches and create 2,500 jobs.

The acquisition comes amid rumours of Carrefour’s plans to divest its Argentine operations, as the retail group seeks to focus on core markets like Spain, France and Brazil.

Several parties have already expressed interest in the business, according to local media reports, including local retail giants Coto, Dia, ChangoMás and La Anónima, as well as investment groups like Grupo One and Inverlat, and appliance manufacturer Newsan.

US-based investment fund Klaff Realty, which owns Tienda Inglesa in Uruguay, is also reportedly among the interested parties.

Carrefour, which entered Argentina in 1982, is among the top multi-format supermarket chains in the country, with more than 590 stores under the Carrefour, Market, Express and Maxi brands operating in 22 provinces.S
