Gellért Baths to close for renovation, Rudas opening hours to change
The Gellért Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool will temporarily close its doors from October 1st, the Budapest Thermal Baths and Swimming Pool Company (BGYH) announced. The long-planned renovation, expected to last 2.5–3 years, aims to renew the building and mechanical systems of the more than century-old facility.
Ildikó Szűts, CEO of BGYH, emphasized on Trend FM that the technical condition no longer allowed for postponement. “For example, we have not been able to operate the more than 100-year-old wave machine for years,” he emphasized.
Relocation to Rudas Bath
Due to the closure of Gellért, the company is changing the visiting hours at the nearby Rudas Bath to provide space for displaced guests. From October 1st:
-
From 6 to 11 am, the space is for traditional bathing with an apron,
-
From 11 to 8 pm, the entire bath can be visited in a co-ed form, including the Turkish bath, the wellness area and the swimming pool.
The CEO emphasized that the Turkish bath is an attractive tourist attraction in itself, so in the future, the possibility of shared bathing will receive greater emphasis.
Significant loss of revenue
The renovation is not only a tourist challenge, but also a financial one. The closure of Gellért will cause more than a loss of revenue of 4 billion forints for the BGYH. This is also sensitive because the company finances the Budapest discount system primarily from higher ticket prices for foreign guests.
“The transfer of traffic to Rudas gives us the opportunity to at least partially replace the lost revenue,” said Ildikó Szűts.
