The British Ministry of Agriculture has lifted the import ban on Hungarian meat products
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has lifted its ban on Hungarian meat products with effect from Thursday. The ministry declared the previous day that it considered Hungary free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
The London-based ministry announced in a statement on Thursday that the UK’s previous import ban on Hungarian cattle, pigs, sheep and game meat products had been lifted.
According to the ministry, the decision was preceded by measures taken by the Hungarian authorities and a rigorous technical review of the current animal health situation carried out by the UK.
The statement stressed that if the situation changes, DEFRA will take the necessary steps without hesitation to protect UK biosecurity.
As a prelude to Wednesday’s announcement declaring Hungary free from RSZKF and Thursday’s announcement in London lifting the import ban, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) also restored Hungary’s official RSZKF-free status with effect from September 10.
