It was suggested that the reduced VAT rate should be extended to all staple foods
The reduced VAT rate must be extended to each basic food item, said the spokesperson of the Democratic Coalition at his online press conference on Thursday.
Olga Kálmán spoke about how “during the last two years of the livelihood crisis caused by the Orbán government”, the prices of many basic foods, including eggs, cheese, butter and chicken legs, have doubled. The “Orbán inflation” increased the price of bread by more than two and a half times, he added.
Definite government intervention would be necessary, however, the cabinet continues to profit from the “European record Hungarian VAT” charged on food, therefore it does not want to reduce the VAT rate for all basic foods, said the politician.
