A boost in local farmers' markets

The Ministry of Agriculture helps the establishment of farmers' markets, by simplifying the bureaucracy, with the financial support of operation and with the amendments of laws. As a result, farmers' markets are esatblished everywhere.

Currently 50 farmers markets are operating, even several hundreds of farmers markets would have reason for existence – says Szilágyi Zsolt, main initiator of the Local Market civil movement. According to his calculations, these stalls can have a more than 100 billion HUF turnover per year, by short-circuiting the path from producer to customer. The dealer chain is often unduly long. According to a food-kilometers indicator a bunch of carrots are traveling almost 2,000 kilometres from the fields to the basket of consumers, while prices risingcontinuously. (MTI)
