Domestic market of jam expanding
According to data from the ConsumerScan of GfK Hungária, the jam market showed expansion in terms of both value and quantity in the first half of 2008. As a result of growth in the jam segment, this accounts for 45 percent of total sales in the category of sweet products for spreading at present. Sales of jam were up by 30 percent in terms of quantity and by 43 percent in terms of value in the first half of 2008, compared to the same period last year. 35 percent of households bought fruit jams in the above period. These flavours are most popular in high income households without children. Apricot remains the most popular flavour, accounting for nearly 50 percent of total sales in terms of quantity. Mixed jams, made from several fruits are the second most popular flavour. These two flavours are also the least expansive. 69 percent of the total quantity sold was purchased by households with children., while more than 50 percent was bought by housewives in the 50+ age group.
