DHL suspends delivery of high-value private packages
DHL Express will temporarily suspend the delivery of packages to individuals to the United States worth more than $800 starting April 21, the company announced on its official website. The move follows a change in US customs regulations in April that imposes stricter customs clearance procedures at a much lower value than before.
New customs threshold: $800
The shipping giant, owned by Deutsche Post, announced that starting April 5, all imported packages worth more than $800 will be subject to formal customs procedures in the United States, compared to the previously valid limit of $2,500. The change primarily affects non-commercial packages – i.e. packages sent or received by individuals – for which customs clearance obligations can significantly slow down the process.
B2B traffic not stopping, but delays may occur
DHL emphasizes that business-to-business (B2B) shipments will continue to operate smoothly, but delays may occur in this segment as well. Shipments worth less than $800, whether from private or business senders, will not be affected by the suspension.
According to the company’s statement, the measure is temporary and aims to prepare for the practical application of the new customs regulations and to support its customers during the transition. DHL confirmed to Reuters last week that it will continue to process packages from Hong Kong in accordance with US customs regulations and is preparing for further changes planned for May 2.
The wider context: changing trade environment
DHL’s announcement is not without precedent: Hong Kong Post has previously suspended sea freight services to the United States after the US government ended duty-free trade preferences for shipments from China and Hong Kong. The removal of duty-free trade and the tightening of customs regulations clearly demonstrate Washington’s desire to re-establish trade relations with the Far East, particularly with regard to China and its special administrative regions.
