The role of travel insurance will increase in 2026 due to the World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, which is expected to attract thousands of Hungarian fans overseas. However, healthcare in North America is extremely expensive, and a serious accident or illness can cost tens of millions of forints. According to K&H, the role of travel insurance with high coverage is therefore particularly important during the World Cup.
Traveling overseas is not only more expensive due to airfare and accommodation, but also due to potential health risks. Healthcare in the United States is largely market-based, so even an emergency examination, an X-ray or a simple outpatient procedure can cost foreign travelers hundreds of thousands of forints.
A more serious accident – for example, a fracture with surgery and a few days of hospital stay – can easily cost millions of forints. In the case of intensive care or special intervention, the total amount can even rise to the tens of millions.
Geographical distance further increases the risk. After a serious medical incident that occurred thousands of kilometers away, organizing repatriation is a complex and expensive process, which can impose a significant financial burden on those affected and their families without adequate insurance. That is why the size of the coverage limits is a key issue in the case of overseas trips.
Extensive coverage for those traveling to the World Cup
K&H’s travel insurance offers several levels of coverage, which provide protection from shorter city visits to longer trips involving multiple locations. The coverage for emergency medical expenses in overseas travel insurance packages starts at 21 million forints in the event of an accident, at a higher level it can be 38 million forints, while in the case of the most extensive construction it can be up to 73 million forints. In the case of emergency care due to illness, the reimbursement limits range from 14 million to 61 million forints. Patient transport is always insured without limits.
During the World Cup, many people will not travel to a single city: they will travel from match to match, from city to city, with luggage and documents. In such situations, it is particularly important that the loss or damage of luggage does not disrupt the entire trip and that there is quick help even if cash or even legal support is unexpectedly needed. The insurance policies therefore also include luggage insurance with a limit of 170 thousand to 350 thousand forints. A cash assistance mediation service is also available up to a limit of 460 thousand to 1.34 million forints, as well as legal protection and personal liability insurance in the amount of 1.368 million to 3.42 million forints. The latter can provide substantial assistance in the event of a damage incident or legal dispute caused abroad.
According to K&H data, in 2025, overseas travel insurance was taken out for an average of 13 days, and the average premium was 25,000 forints. This amount can be dwarfed by an American hospital bill of up to several million forints, so choosing the right insurance for fans preparing for the 2026 World Cup is not only an administrative issue, but also a conscious financial decision.
