Responsible packaging, sustainable future
Both the European and the domestic market feel the decline in retail sales. At the same time the changing market environment is encouraging cardboard packaging users to look for more cost-effective, simpler solutions.

Sustainability and environmental protection play a decisive role in the life of BS Plastic Kft.
“This is what we strive for in our daily operations and nothing proves this more than our products, which have been developed and manufactured for over a decade on a biopolymer basis, and are perfectly suited to a sustainable and circular economy. We are currently working on several innovations for the food and agriculture sectors”,
says head of marketing Kitti Büki-Kovács.
Changing regulations
In May 2024 the European Parliament adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which aims to reduce packaging waste and introduce recycling criteria. The regulation includes measures such as banning certain types of packaging, tightening reuse requirements and imposing mandatory recycled content, even for food contact materials.
Attila Fazekas, CEO of Box Print-FSD Packaging Kft. says the market is increasingly focusing on replacing plastic packaging materials with recycled and recyclable cardboard packaging.
“We are committed to sustainability and environmental protection. We regularly monitor customer needs and improve our products to meet them. 95% of the raw materials we use are waste-based recycled raw materials”,
he adds.
Decreasing wall thickness
Packaging trends are focusing on sustainability, which includes minimising the weight and volume of packaging, using recyclable materials and limiting substances of concern such as lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium. Their concentration mustn’t exceed 100 mg/kg. Packaging uniformity and the reduction of wall thickness are achieved where it makes economic and environmental sense.
Greenstic Kft.’s experience is that innovation mainly takes place in the area of raw materials.
“Plastic-free biodegradable cups, palm leaf, wood fibre – they can all be found in our product selection. In Western Europe seaweed boxes are also gaining ground. We offer sustainable alternatives in every product range, do education to help market players make the transition, and offer composting at festivals and events for those who want it. This year’s focus is on sustainable festivals, which are mainly attended by younger age groups”,
informs sales manager Zsófia Burai. //
IKSZ appoints new director
The Drink Carton Environmental Association (IKSZ) has appointed Ágnes Nyikos as its new director. IKSZ is an association of Hungarian beverage carton producers (Tetra Pak Hungária Zrt., SIG Combibloc GmbH & CO KG, Elopak Kft.), who believe it is important to raise awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of beverage cartons. The organisation promotes and encourages the selective collection of drink cartons in Hungary, in order to protect the environment, recycle valuable raw materials and save energy.
Ágnes Nyikos previously worked at a non-profit organisation for 17 years, bringing together waste management and environmental companies.
“It is exciting and challenging time to join IKSZ. I am passionate about sustainability and look forward to working successfully with stakeholders”,
said Ágnes Nyikos. //
Production starts in the new Sipospack facility
Sipospack Kft. is one of the most important packaging technology companies in Hungary. Thanks to the new investment, the production hall has doubled in size and the new machines have also made waste use more efficient.
Owner and managing director Gyula Sipos underlined at the opening ceremony:
“We have expanded our warehouse and production line in Sóskút by 3,000m², creating five new jobs. From the very beginning our green logo has been sending the message: we operate in an environmentally friendly way, manufacturing green products”.
He added that a lot of plastic by-products are generated during the various work processes, but these are clean, recyclable materials that are reintegrated into production. //
More conscious food ordering
Greenstic Europe’s consumer research looked at consumer consciousness in food ordering. The results of the online survey with over 1,000 respondents reveal: environmental sustainability is becoming an important factor in consumer decisions. More than half of the respondents stressed the importance of cutting down on plastic packaging. Many people believe that packaging should preserve the quality of the food, preventing leakage and ensuring that the contents stay warm. 80.5% of respondents said that knowing in advance what packaging the food comes in would influence their buying decision. The majority of respondents are willing to pay extra for quality, environmentally friendly packaging, but expect the price of this to be clearly indicated. //
