Over one billion bottles recycled in six months in Hungary
Hungary’s mandatory deposit return system (DRS), launched six months ago, has already delivered impressive results, with over one billion beverage containers recycled by early January. According to MOHU, the system operator, an average of 100 bottles are returned every second across the country.
This achievement has been made possible not only by consumers but also by the REpoints—stores participating in the system—which have received a total of 7.2 billion HUF in handling fees from MOHU. These REpoints operate and maintain return machines, ensure clean surroundings, and handle manual returns and storage in smaller shops until collection.
Although stores under 400 square meters are not required to join the system, many have voluntarily participated, making manual or automated return options accessible in most towns. MOHU continues to welcome new participants, emphasizing that consumers have already redeemed 40 billion HUF worth of vouchers, bank transfers, or charity donations through the system.
The holiday season was particularly remarkable, with record-breaking activity between Christmas and New Year. On several days, over 10 million bottles were returned nationwide. On average, consumers returned 18 containers per transaction. The system’s efficiency is highlighted by the fact that the most frequently used machine has already collected over 1.1 million bottles.
MOHU states that these results demonstrate the success of the deposit return system and encourages additional stores to join, ensuring even broader access to this environmentally beneficial initiative.
