In six months, consumers donated 100 million forints to charitable causes through the mandatory redemption system
Through the deposit bottle return system, which began six months ago and has become an integral part of everyday life, consumers are returning 5-6 million beverage packaging per day and are also paying attention to charity: a total of one hundred million forints have been donated to charitable causes so far.
The deposit return system (DRS) has become commonplace among consumers in a short time, achieving spectacular success: an average of 6 million beverage packaging is returned to the circular economy every day – according to a summary sent to MTI on Wednesday by the MOHU MOL Waste Management Zrt., the communications agency.
As they write, all packaging with a return logo can be returned at manual REpoints or at vending machines in larger grocery stores. At the latter, customers can claim the return fee back in the form of an immediate bank transfer in addition to a store voucher, and can also donate it to charity.
According to the announcement, in 2024, consumers can support three institutions as part of the DRS: the Heim Pál National Pediatric Institute, the Bethesda Children’s Hospital of the Hungarian Reformed Church, and the Pediatric Clinic of Semmelweis University.
By the first week of October, 57 million forints had been collected from donations, and just two months later, by the beginning of December, the amount had exceeded 100 million forints
– they emphasize.
The current cooperation with the hospitals will last until July 2025. The amounts received by then will be divided equally by MOHU among the supported institutions.
