Vanilla plantations in Madagascar are protected by armed forces
Vanilla growers protect the crop with armed forces in Madagascar. The island is the world’s largest supplier of this herb – origo wrote.
Madagascar is the world’s largest vanilla exporter, exporting 80 percent of the vanilla available on the world market. The world market price of vanilla has now risen to 150-190 thousand forints per kilogram.
As the police can not provide protection against robbers, most farmers have moved to their plantations with their rifles. (origo)
