The public often thinks of packaging as unnecessary waste and an environmental burden, when in fact it plays a key role in reducing food waste and protecting products. Good packaging solutions not only increase shelf-life, but also reduce the environmental impact of production and logistics processes. Miklós Nagy, former secretary general of the Hungarian Association of Packaging and Materials Handling (CSAOSZ) opened the event. He told that food supply chains are responsible for 24% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and in Hungary this figure is even higher at 34%.

A fenntartható csomagolás nem csupán környezetvédelmi szempontból fontos, hanem az élelmiszer-biztonság és a gazdasági fenntarthatóság területén is kulcsszerepet játszik
Professor Dr Károly Belina, the president of FECSO spoke about the challenges facing the packaging industry. He stressed that sustainable packaging isn’t only a technological issue, but also a complex task from an economic and regulatory point of view. The next speaker was Dr Tamás Tábi, bioplastic research and development director of iPLA.Tech, who talked about the latest packaging innovations. He called attention to the importance of bioplastics made from renewable raw materials such as corn starch (PLA). László Büki, honorary president of FECSO closed the press conference. He underlined the importance of education, not only for industry players but also for consumers, and said that FECSO is open to all organisations that actively contribute to the promotion of sustainable packaging solutions.
