German retail sales increase in February
German retail sales grew in February, instead of stagnating, as analysts had expected, the German Federal Statistical Office, Destatis, said in a report released on Monday.
German retail sales grew by 0.8 percent in real terms in February compared to January, when they had grown by 0.7 percent.
February retail sales were 4.9 percent higher than a year earlier, also in real terms, after a 4 percent increase in January.
Food retail sales grew by 0.8 percent in February compared to the previous month and by 3.3 percent year-on-year. Non-food retail sales grew by 0.6 percent compared to the previous month and by 5.2 percent compared to February 2024.
Online and mail-order retail sales grew by 1 percent compared to January and by 15.4 percent compared to February last year.
