From February 1st, you can withdraw 300 thousand forints for free
The government has doubled the limit for free cash withdrawals from 150,000 forints to 300,000 forints as of February 1, the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) informed MTI in a statement on Sunday.
According to the government’s decision, cash withdrawals of up to 300,000 forints per month, even in two installments, will be possible free of charge. Despite the spread of electronic payments, cash remains a basic means of payment, and therefore access to cash is the basis for the financial autonomy of Hungarians, the ministry added.
According to the announcement, banks must provide their customers with the opportunity to access cash at a reduced rate as provided by law. The free service applies to all fees and costs, so the transaction fee cannot be passed on to the public.
There is no restriction on which service provider’s ATM someone wishes to withdraw money from, as it is equally free of charge for both their own and third-party ATMs. The government will strictly monitor all of this in order to protect families, they added.
The government continues to work to ensure that access to cash and financial services is ensured under equal conditions for all Hungarians throughout the country, regardless of their place of residence, meaning that there is an ATM in every settlement, the ministry said.
