That is why brown eggs are more expensive than white ones
Buyers may often find that the price of brown eggs is higher than that of white eggs. This difference does not arise from health or aesthetic qualities, but from agricultural reasons. Hens that lay brown eggs require more feed, which increases the expenses of farmers.
Speaking to CNN, Daniel Brey, the owner of Brey’s Egg Farm, said that the color of eggs is not determined by nutrition, but by the specific breed of hen. For example, White Leghorn chickens lay white eggs, while Rhode Island Red chickens lay brown-shelled eggs. The real cost difference lies in the feed consumption of the animals.
Joan Frank, deputy director of the dietetics program at the University of California, emphasized that the nutritional value of eggs is independent of the color of the shell. Contrary to popular belief, brown eggs are not healthier than white eggs. According to food industry analyst Phil Lempert, brown eggs are generally 10% to 20% more expensive in the United States.
