We can see more and more fully electric cars on the roads: according to data from carinfo.hu, for example, an average of nearly 900 new electric passenger vehicles have been put on the road in Hungary this year. Their popularity is no coincidence, as driving an electric car is economical, environmentally friendly and comfortable. Yet many people are unsure whether such a vehicle is really a good choice for them and whether the investment is really worth it in the long run.

One of the largest fleet managers and mobility service providers in our country, Ayvens – which operates a significant number of electric cars in the fleet it manages – has now collected the most important aspects to help us decide how electric driving suits us, our life situation and our driving habits.

  1. Driving habits

First of all, it is worth considering how we use our car in everyday life. If we prefer to make shorter trips – i.e. mainly to go to work, take the children to school, or only use it for larger shopping trips – then an electric car with a shorter range can serve us perfectly well. However, if we regularly make longer trips, it is worth choosing an electric model with a longer range, a higher category and a larger electric motor or a plug-in hybrid car.

  1. Range

In the case of an electric car, the range is typically the first data we look at, and although the number given by the manufacturer is indeed one of the most important decision-making criteria, it is worth keeping in mind that it does not always reflect reality. As with conventionally powered cars, the range depends largely on our driving style, i.e. if we drive too vigorously or at a higher speed, this number can quickly decrease. Energy consumption can be affected by the use of comfort systems built into the car, as well as by inadequate road conditions, such as hilly terrain or poor quality roads. That is why we should make sure in advance that the selected model provides us with adequate comfort in everyday life even in extreme conditions.

  1. Charging options and infrastructure

Although the domestic electric charging network is constantly developing on a smaller or larger scale, the biggest uncertainty among customers is related to charging issues. That is why, before renting or buying an electric car, we should find out about our options. For example, we should assess whether there is a way to install a home charger, which can be a particularly practical and economical solution. Ask your employer what options are available for charging your electric car at the office or at your location. Also, check where there are public charging stations in your area and along your typical routes. Also, find out how long it takes to fully “refuel” with fast chargers and traditional chargers, as there can be a significant difference between the two. Plan some routes taking into account the availability of charging stations and the time needed to charge your vehicle. Based on this, we will be able to decide more easily what range electric car would be ideal for us.

  1. Costs and benefits

The price of an electric car – although it is getting closer to that of conventionally powered vehicles – is typically higher, but in the case of EVs, it is worth thinking about the return on investment in the medium and long term. Since electricity is cheaper than fuel, with the availability of appropriate charging methods, we can expect lower operating costs in the long term. Electric cars have fewer moving parts, so their maintenance needs are also lower, meaning we can expect lower service costs. In addition, their purchase may be supported by government subsidies, tax breaks and other purchase incentives – these are worth looking into before choosing a car.

  1. Model

Before making a decision, it is also worth finding out about the types of electric vehicles, as there are a wide range of options available to us. We can choose a 100% electric vehicle (BEV), which is ideal primarily for those who live at home.
