These will be the biggest hits in tourism in the summer of 2024
Despite the unstable economic situation and fluctuating exchange rates, the tourism sector will continue to flourish in 2024. According to the Mastercard Economics Institute’s latest “Travel Trends 2024” report, a strong increase in tourism can be observed, which includes nine of the last ten most profitable days of air traffic this year, the Pénzcentrum pointed out.
European and global tourism trends
Based on the report, Europe proves to be one of the most resilient sectors of tourism. The particularly strong growth is also reflected in the growing number of American tourists who prefer Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom the most. The number of nights spent by European tourists also increased, rising from 2.88 billion in 2019 to 2.91 billion in 2023.
Popular and affordable destinations
Munich will be the most sought-after destination in the summer of 2024, thanks to a major international sports event. It is followed by cities such as Tirana, Nice, Corfu and Istanbul. Affordable coastal locations such as Albania, Croatia and Turkey are seeing the biggest growth.
Luxury and economical travel Destinations
Italy’s Taormina and Rimini, as well as French Riviera cities such as Ramatuelle, Saint-Tropez and Cannes, are among the most expensive summer destinations in Europe. On the contrary, the capitals of Eastern Europe, such as Budapest, Bucharest, Prague and Warsaw, as well as the Spanish coasts, such as Costa Brava and Costa Del Sol, offer more economical alternatives.
Off-season and length of stay
Instead of the classic summer months, more and more European tourists prefer the off-season of May-June and September-October. In the last ten years, the proportion of vacations spent in the off-season increased by 1.8 percentage points. According to the report, with every 6 degrees Celsius rise in temperature, the expected length of stay for tourists also increases.
